ELDER QUALLS
By Shaka Senghor | Performed by André De Shields
This monologue is based on conversations with Elder Qualls, an advocate, re-entry specialist and community leader whose son is currently incarcerated in Michigan.
ELDER QUALLS IS ASKING YOU TO TAKE ACTION
Elder Qualls’ son, Yusef, was sentenced to Life Without Parole at 16—a sentence that was ruled unconstitutional by the supreme court eight years ago. Yusef, along with about 200 other Juvenile Lifers in Michigan, are still waiting for re-sentencing hearings. Please demand that AG Dana Nessel and Governor Gretchen instruct prosecutors to re-sentence these men and women before these unconstitutional sentences become death sentences:
LISTEN
Millions of people are impacted by our nation’s cruel justice system. They are witnesses to cruelty. These are their stories. These are their calls to action.
TAKE ACTION
As COVID-19 ravages jails, prisons, and detention centers across the United States, those suffering and fearful inside and their families, friends, and communities are asking you to take action now.
